Live Music

The New York-based Caveman have had a whirlwind two years since they first started playing music together. Veterans of separate projects that folded around the same time, these long-time friends looked to each other to find a new outlet for their musical compulsions. This familiarity shows on their self-released debut album, CoCo Beware: unleashing a dark surf vibe over pounding rhythmic grooves, the players come together with the comfort level and chemistry of a much older band. The acclaim they’ve received has extended to their live performances, following a number of buzzed-about CMJ shows and tours with such bands as The War on Drugs and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The first month of 2012 has already seen the band sign to Fat Possum Records. (via Caveman: Discovering Fire | Under The Radar)

SANDWICH ART BY BRITTANY POWELL

Fun connoisseur of modern art, Brittany Powell, of Low Commitment-Projects (“making stuff happen with little time and energy”) has achieved the perfect trifecta: art, comedy, and food. She’s made some awesome sandwich tributes to some art legends such as Damien Hirst, Piet Mondrian, Jaspher Johns, and others. How great is this?!

“I write my songs. I made my own videos. Nothing goes without my permission. It’s all authentic.” - Lana Del Ray

“My fans know I’m not a showstopper on stage. I don’t have fucking circus lights. I just don’t care.” - Lana Del Rey

“I’m interested in the gorgeous side of life, but also familiar with the dark side too.” Lana Del Rey

Foster the People’s Torches and Mumford and Son’s Sigh No More were albums I spent hours listening to over the summer; I don’t listen to them as much now but I felt the need to mention them. It’s the same way with Young The Giant’s eponymous album.

If you still haven’t picked up Bon Iver’s

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Matt and Kim 7/26/11

Matt and Kim played a weekend set at the vic theatre, on july 25 & 26. The show on Saturday the 25th was an 21+ show, and the sunday show was all ages.  I attended the sunday show.  I waited in line for an hour and a half before the doors opened so i could get the best possible seats for one of my favorite bands!  as soon as i walked in i noticed that the venue was very small and probably fit around 500 to 600 people.  After hours of waiting, the first opening act came on.  They were a small local two man band, that were sub par.  They had a few good guitar riffs to start out the song, but the lyrics did not fit the music.  Every song slowly progressed into a loud screaming ending, and that genre of music did not fit the crowd that was in the theatre at that particular time.

The second opening act was a DJ.  After he set up his small, mixing station that consisted of his macbook pro and 7 or eight loud speakers, i didn’t know what to expect.  In the end, it was a great warm-up gig! He got the crowd energized by mixing some classic matt & Kim songs with classic rock tunes, and todays pop songs. After about 35 minutes of playing, he packed up all his equipment and left the stage.

Matt and Kim came out onstage 20 minutes after they were originally planned to.  They opened with “block after block” which is an upcoming hit on their new album.  They could not of picked a better song to open with that night!  after that Matt & Kim both interacted with the crowd for a bit, and then played their next song which was “Grand”.  They proceeded to play some of there older songs such as “ok go’ and “yea yeah”.  then they played most of the popular songs off of there new album.  Matt & Kim were playing this concert with a lot of passion.  They truly wanted to be playing this concert for us more than anything in the world.  One of my favorite things about this concert was that they truly get the audience involved in the music.  Before “cameras” Matt threw out 4 bags of regular deflated balloons and had the whole audience blow them all up and throw them up at the same time.  After one minute mostly all the balloons were blown up, and as soon as the intro of “cameras” began, everyone threw the balloons up and went crazy. Also, during “where your coming from”  Kim made a shout out to her dad who was in the balcony above my right shoulder.  She told everyone “everyone take off your shirts and wave them around in the air!  I wanna give my dad the best fucking show he has ever seen!”  That definitely got the crowd pumped up as everyone jumped around and waved there shirts around!  Matt & Kim had one encore and played a rendition of “daylight”.  The concert was fantastic overall!  It was the most high energy show I have ever seen in my life!  The venue could not of been a better fit for the band.  I saw Matt & Kim at lollapalooza in 2010, and it was an epic show, and was one of my favorite concerts that year, but this show was not even comparable! Matt & Kim put on a GREAT show at the Vic! I highly recommend trying to see them if they come to your town, and when they comeback to Chicago, i know i will be there!
